Igoumenitsa pool turns pink, sparking water quality concerns

A small pool at Makrygiali Beach in Igoumenitsa has turned an intense pink-fuchsia color, causing concern among local residents and visitors regarding water quality.

While visual evidence alone cannot confirm the cause, experts suggest several biological possibilities. One potential explanation is the massive growth of halophilic microorganisms, such as purple sulfur bacteria, which thrive in shallow, stagnant waters with high salinity, high temperatures, and low oxygen levels. Another possibility is the presence of the microalgae Dunaliella salina, which produces red or orange pigments in high-salinity environments.

Although such color changes do not automatically indicate the presence of sewage or chemical pollutants, environmental contamination cannot be ruled out without testing. Local authorities from the Municipality of Igoumenitsa and the Epirus Region are expected to conduct water sampling and laboratory analysis to determine if the phenomenon is a natural seasonal occurrence or a sign of environmental degradation.
