IGSU reports decline in Romanian vegetation fires
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) reports that vegetation fires in Romania have decreased in 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Between January 1 and August 31, firefighters responded to 10,653 vegetation fires, a reduction of approximately 28% from the 14,719 interventions recorded during the same period last year.
Forest fires also saw a decline, with 436 interventions recorded in the first eight months of the year, down from 582 in 2025, representing a decrease of about 25%.
Despite the downward trend, IGSU warns that the number of interventions remains alarmingly high. The agency emphasizes that fires can quickly escalate due to high temperatures, drought, and wind, posing risks to people, property, and the environment. To promote safety, IGSU is conducting a national campaign titled ‘Do not ignite danger! Burning dry vegetation is prohibited!’ to encourage prevention and responsibility.
