Iguatu City Hall under investigation for hiring irregularities

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Ceará (MPCE) has denied a request from the Iguatu City Hall to archive investigations into potential irregularities regarding personnel hiring. Prosecutor Guilherme Miranda Maia has ordered the municipality to provide explanations and documentation within 10 days, warning of potential charges of disobedience.

The investigation follows allegations from opposition council members that the administration is prioritizing temporary contracts, commissioned positions, and study grants over hiring candidates who passed public civil service exams.

Key findings from the MP include a “yo-yo effect” in the payroll: after a decree in May 2026 aimed to reduce costs by dismissing temporary and commissioned staff, the numbers surged again in June. Commissioned positions rose from 129 to 291, while temporary roles increased from 839 to 1,101. Additionally, investigators found irregularities in the ‘Mais Aprendizagem’ project, including duplicate IDs and grants issued without proper documentation.
