Iguaçu Falls tourist fined for jumping safety railings
A tourist has been fined approximately R$ 7,800 by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) after jumping over safety railings at Iguaçu Falls to retrieve a mobile phone.
The incident occurred in June at the Devil's Throat walkway within Iguaçu National Park in Foz do Iguaçu. Video footage captured the individual climbing over the guardrail and jumping toward the waters near the falls to recover the device before struggling to return to the walkway.
The administrative sanction was issued under Article 90 of Federal Decree No. 6,514/2008, which governs infractions against flora, fauna, and preservation areas. Authorities utilized monitoring camera footage and reports from the park concessionaire, Urbia Cataratas, as evidence for the violation. While the individual's identity and nationality have not been released, they maintain the right to appeal the decision through administrative channels.
