Iguazu Falls walkways closed due to extreme water flow

Extreme water levels at Iguazu Falls have forced the temporary closure of several walkways and circuits due to heavy rainfall and the El Niño phenomenon. In Brazil, the flow rate reached 12.8 million liters per second, more than eight times the usual average of 1.5 million liters per second.

In Argentina, authorities implemented safety protocols, closing the Upper Circuit to protect visitors from potential debris and to ensure the stability of metal walkways. While some paths like the Green Trail and Lower Circuit remain operational, others, such as the Macuco Trail, are under technical evaluation.

Water levels are expected to remain high, with flow rates at the Capanema station in Brazil doubling within 24 hours. Although recent rainfall has ceased and clear weather is forecasted for the week, officials are monitoring the situation closely as the massive volume of water continues to move through the river system.
