Iguazu National Park closes Devil's Throat walkway due to high water flow

Authorities have implemented a preventive temporary closure of the walkway to the Devil's Throat at Iguazu National Park due to a massive increase in the Iguazu River's water flow. The volume of water has surged to over 8.4 million liters per second and is projected to potentially exceed 9 million liters per second, significantly higher than the historical average of approximately 1.5 million liters per second.

The surge is attributed to heavy rainfall in the Iguazu River basin, which traverses the state of Paraná. Regional forecasts for September suggest increased precipitation, potentially influenced by the El Niño phenomenon.

While the walkway is closed to ensure visitor safety, the park remains open for other activities, including hiking, cycling, and viewing the falls from alternative observation points. Reopening of the walkway is contingent upon water levels returning to safe circulation standards, though no specific timeframe has been established.
