igus develops PTFE-free materials for food processing

igus has introduced new polymer-based components designed for the food processing industry to meet evolving regulatory standards regarding chemical safety.

The company developed iglidur A181PF, a new material for plain bearings that is free from both PTFE and bisphenols. This development addresses upcoming restrictions from the European Chemicals Agency regarding PFAS and new EU requirements for bisphenols in food-contact materials. The material utilizes a combination of solid lubricants and an optimized polymer matrix to provide low friction and dry-running properties, operating in temperatures from -50 C to +90 C.

Additionally, igus has launched the drylin W linear guide, an EHEDG-certified system for food technology. The guide features a tool-free removable polymer carriage made of PTFE-free, PFAS-tested iglidur A160. The system is designed for high hygiene, utilizing electropolished stainless steel shafts and a lubrication-free design to prevent contamination from dirt or microorganisms in automation solutions like packaging machines and filling systems.
