IHH Healthcare targets 10,000-bed capacity in India via Fortis expansion

IHH Healthcare is pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy in India through its subsidiary, Fortis Healthcare. The group aims to nearly double Fortis’s capacity to approximately 10,000 beds by 2030. This growth will be achieved by expanding existing facilities to 7,500 beds and utilizing new hospital construction or mergers and acquisitions for the remainder. Additionally, IHH plans to increase its stake in Fortis from the current 31.1 per cent to at least 51 per cent within the next few years.

This expansion is driven by a significant shortage of hospital beds in India, even within major metropolitan areas, and a growing demand for private healthcare as insurance coverage expands.

On a broader regional scale, IHH Healthcare CEO Prem Kumar Nair is focusing on the challenges of an aging and increasingly affluent Asian population. To address rising lifestyle diseases and the needs of an older demographic, the group has launched ‘Healthspan’, a clinical-based preventive health and longevity program. Currently available in Singapore, the program aims to expand to other markets, including India, Turkey, and Greater China, focusing on clinical interventions rather than purely aesthetic wellness.
