IHTT seeks to regulate UNAH free student transport units

The Honduran Institute of Land Transportation (IHTT) has opened a dialogue to regulate the 99 free transportation units provided by the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH). The IHTT clarified that it does not intend to suspend the free service for students, but insists that the units must operate under established land transportation regulations and legal frameworks.

The university's program, which expanded to 99 units for the first academic period of 2026, serves students in Tegucigalpa and various regional campuses. The IHTT maintains that providing free service and adhering to legal regulations are not incompatible concepts.

In response to the regulatory move, Deputy Carlos Umaña criticized the initiative, labeling it an ‘attack of intolerance’ and a ‘monumental error.’ Umaña argued that intervening in the service would negatively impact students and noted that the program is non-partisan. The push for regulation follows recent agreements with taxi drivers to combat illegal transport services.
