IIIT Ranchi student death sparks protests and NHRC probe
A first-year B.Tech student, identified as Aditya, allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Ranchi on a Saturday night. The incident has sparked significant unrest, with students protesting against the institute's management.
Students have alleged gross negligence, claiming that medical assistance and an ambulance were not provided in a timely manner. Some allegations include claims that the on-duty doctor and security personnel were in an inebriated state. Protesters have demanded the resignation of the institute's director and improvements to basic hostel facilities.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the matter. NHRC member Priyank Kanojia stated that the commission is issuing notices to relevant investigative agencies and government officials to determine the cause of the death and the reasons behind the alleged delay in medical response.
Local police, including Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan, have launched a forensic investigation. While preliminary inputs suggest academic pressure may have been a motive, authorities are still collecting evidence and recording statements to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
