IIO investigating death in Fernie
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is investigating the death of a man in Fernie that occurred in July. The Elk Valley RCMP were notified on July 11, 2026, after a member of the public discovered an unresponsive man in the Elk River.
The deceased individual had been reported missing on June 20, 2026, prompting a search involving Fernie Search & Rescue, police, emergency workers, and volunteers. The BC Coroners Service reported the death to the IIO on July 14, noting that the man had a previous interaction with police prior to being found.
IIO investigators have collected evidence, identified witnesses, and conducted interviews.
