IISER Pune removes Umar Khalid book from library

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune has withdrawn the book ‘Fractured Communities: Adivasi Histories and the Politics of Power’ from its library collection. The book, written by jailed activist Umar Khalid, is based on his doctoral research regarding state formation and tribal-state relations in the Singhbhum region of Jharkhand.

The decision followed social media criticism after the book was listed among new acquisitions. Critics questioned the use of public funds for a science institute to acquire work by Khalid, who is currently detained under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

In a statement, IISER Pune explained that the book was retracted as a precaution to avoid ‘any misunderstanding or unrest’. The institute noted that its library collection is developed through committee recommendations and routinely adds over 50 books monthly. Authorities stated they are examining what further steps may be taken regarding the matter.
