IIT Bombay professor questioned in student suicide investigation

The Mumbai Crime Branch has recorded the statement of IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayan Doolla following the death of 22-year-old student Sahil Wakode, who died by suicide on September 18. During approximately eight to ten hours of questioning, Doolla denied all allegations of caste-based and mental harassment, maintaining that he followed all institutional guidelines.

Wakode's family alleges that the student faced caste-based discrimination at the institute. His father, Ravindra Wakode, had previously filed a police complaint, leading to an investigation into alleged abetment to suicide. The institute noted that Wakode was reportedly caught using ChatGPT during a mid-semester exam shortly before his death, though it stated no disciplinary action was taken.

Following the incident, Doolla was removed from his position as Dean of Administrative Affairs. Protests have intensified at the campus, with students initiating a hunger strike to demand accountability and the resignation of IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare. Meanwhile, Wakode's parents were denied permission by police to continue their protest at Azad Maidan, prompting plans to move their demonstration to the institute's Powai campus. Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage and have recorded statements from approximately 50 individuals.
