CCTV footage has emerged providing new details in the investigation of the death of Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old B-Tech student at IIT Bombay. The footage, recorded during a mid-term exam on September 18, shows Sahil using a mobile phone in the examination hall between 12:30 PM and 12:45 PM.

It is alleged that Sahil was attempting to use the AI tool ChatGPT to solve or upload exam questions. During the exam, invigilator Professor Surya Narayan Dula observed the activity, confronted the student, and escorted him out of the hall. CCTV records show Sahil entering his hostel room at approximately 1:25 PM, after which he was not seen again before his body was discovered later that evening.

While institute administration stated the student received counseling regarding exam rules, Sahil's family and protesting students allege he was subjected to severe harassment, humiliation, and caste-based discrimination following his removal from the hall. The Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating the matter. Police have registered a case against Professor Dula for abetment of suicide and violations of the SC/ST Act.
