The death of Sahil Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student at IIT Bombay, has triggered intense protests and a criminal investigation. Wakode was found dead in his hostel room on September 18, following an incident during a mid-semester examination where he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone to access ChatGPT.

Wakode's family has filed an FIR against Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, alleging abetment of suicide and caste-based harassment. They claim the professor used casteist slurs against him for months. In response, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has taken over the investigation, examining CCTV footage that shows Wakode using a phone in the exam hall and later returning to his hostel.

IIT Bombay has responded by placing Professor Doolla on leave and forming a 10-member committee, headed by Professor Ramesh Venkateswaran, to investigate the circumstances. While the institute initially suggested the student was caught cheating, it later retracted specific details regarding ChatGPT usage. Amidst the controversy, the institute has also begun replacing ceiling fans in hostels with wall-mounted versions as a safety measure. The case has drawn national attention, with political figures like Rahul Gandhi offering support to the grieving family.
