IIT Bombay student death probe investigates cheating and harassment allegations
Sahil Wakode, a second-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, reportedly submitted a written apology to the institute after being caught using ChatGPT during a mid-semester thermodynamics examination. In the statement, Wakode admitted to the mistake, cited inadequate preparation, and requested a second chance. He was found dead in his hostel room on September 18, shortly after the incident.
The Mumbai crime branch is investigating the death and has recorded statements from over 40 individuals, including IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare and Professor Suryanarayana Doolla. Professor Doolla has been charged with abetment of suicide following allegations from the deceased student's parents, who claim Wakode faced caste-based harassment and mental pressure at the institute. Doolla has denied these allegations, stating he followed prescribed institutional procedures. He has since been removed from his administrative role as Dean of Administrative Affairs.
