IIT Bombay student dies by suicide after ChatGPT exam incident

Sahil Wakode, a 22-year-old second-year B.Tech student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, died by suicide in his hostel room on a Friday evening. The incident occurred hours after he was reportedly caught using a mobile phone to upload an exam question paper to ChatGPT to seek answers during a semester examination.

IIT Bombay officials stated that no formal disciplinary action was taken against the student. They noted that the instructor and Head of Department met with him to provide counseling and assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career. However, protesting students on campus have disputed this, alleging that Wakode was threatened with a one-year suspension that would have forced him to vacate his hostel.

Following the death, students held protests demanding accountability and transparency from the institute's administration. The student's parents have filed a formal complaint with the Mumbai Police, alleging that Wakode faced severe mental harassment and caste-based discrimination. A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigation, including allegations against Professor Suryanarayan Dulla, has been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch.
