IIT Delhi leads Indian universities in QS Asia Rankings 2027

The QS Asia University Rankings 2027 show a mixed performance for Indian higher education institutions. While IIT Delhi remains the top-ranked university in India, it fell seven places to 66th in the regional rankings.

Several other premier Indian institutions also saw declines in their positions. IISc Bengaluru dropped 15 places to 79th, IIT Bombay fell to 83rd, and IIT Madras moved to 85th. IIT Kharagpur ranked 90th, while IIT Kanpur experienced the largest decline, falling 20 places to 97th. Despite these individual slips, six Indian institutions maintained positions within Asia’s top 100.

India’s overall presence in the rankings grew, with 325 universities featured, including 34 new entrants. This makes India the second most represented higher education system in Asia, trailing only Mainland China. While top institutions face competitiveness challenges, they continue to show strength in research output and employer reputation, with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi ranking seventh and tenth respectively for employer reputation in Asia.
