IIT Guwahati researchers develop brain-inspired visual processing device

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, have developed a light-sensitive device designed for low-energy visual processing. The technology aims to mimic the human brain's ability to sense, store, and process information simultaneously through artificial synapses, rather than relying on the energy-intensive sequential data transfer used in traditional electronic image processing.

Lead author Professor PK Giri noted that while standard electronic systems require separate components for cameras, memory, and processors to analyze images pixel by pixel, the human brain recognizes objects almost instantly using stored context. This new neuromorphic device could significantly reduce energy consumption in applications such as intelligent facial recognition, robotic vision, and smart computing.
