IIT Guwahati student Ritesh Raj Singh dies in campus fall, police probe

A third‑year BTech Computer Science student, Ritesh Raj Singh, was found dead after falling from the fifth floor of the academic complex at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati on July 27, 2024. Police have opened a case, stating they have not ruled out suicide and are examining all circumstances surrounding the incident. The institute’s director, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, expressed deep sorrow and said the campus is in close contact with the family, offering full support.

The incident follows previous student deaths at IIT Guwahati, including another case in September 2024 and four suspected suicides reported in 2024, prompting renewed discussion on campus mental‑health services. The institute highlighted counselling resources through its SAATHI Counselling Club and Centre for Holistic Wellbeing. Singh had recently secured an internship with Goldman Sachs, underscoring his academic standing.
