IIT Kanpur develops AI system to identify welfare needs

IIT Kanpur has developed an AI-powered Family Score system designed to help governments identify households in need of welfare support. The system utilizes an ensemble of machine learning models trained on approximately 15 existing government-owned datasets to assess socio-economic conditions without the need for additional, costly household surveys.

In a Phase 1 collaboration with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the institute tested whether this AI approach could serve as a reliable and cost-effective alternative to traditional survey methods. The findings indicated that the AI models could outperform conventional surveys in determining household conditions while requiring significantly less time, manpower, and resources.

Representatives from IIT Kanpur presented these findings to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and other senior officials. The project team included IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Prof. Nitin Saxena of the Wadhwani School of AI & Intelligent Systems, and Manish Srivastava, CEO of the Airawat Research Foundation.
