IIT Madras admits student with 90% spinal muscular disability

J. Santhosh, a 17-year-old from Chennai, has secured admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras for a four-year Bachelor of Science programme in Data Science and Applications.

Santhosh, who lives with cerebral palsy and a 90 per cent spinal muscular disability, achieved this milestone after topping his school in Class 12. His admission was facilitated by the “IIT-M for All” initiative, which offers a flexible online learning model suitable for students with physical constraints.

Supported by his family and the NGO TN Volunteers, Santhosh cleared the qualifier examination on his second attempt. The NGO has pledged to cover his first-year tuition fees and provide additional training in artificial intelligence.
