Mount Papandayan experiences blue fire phenomenon amid volcanic gas warnings
A rare blue fire phenomenon has appeared at Kawah Manuk on Mount Papandayan in West Java. The occurrence, observed around September 23-24, 2026, involves the combustion of sulfur-rich gases interacting with oxygen. While the phenomenon is visually striking, authorities have restricted access to Pos 7 and implemented a 500-meter safety radius due to the risk of toxic volcanic gases such as sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide.
The Geological Agency (Badan Geologi) is currently analyzing the event. Experts note that the blue fire does not necessarily indicate an imminent eruption but signifies degassing and hydrothermal activity. Although the intensity of the flames has reportedly decreased, officials urge tourists to avoid the area to prevent exposure to hazardous fumes.
Separately, the Ijen Crater Nature Park in East Java is scheduled to reopen to tourists on September 28, 2026. The site had been closed since early September following forest fires. Authorities have issued safety guidelines for returning visitors, including the mandatory use of masks, flashlights, and warm clothing, while emphasizing strict adherence to fire prevention protocols.
