IJmond region imposes code‑red measures amid extreme heat

The Dutch meteorological institute (KNMI) issued a code‑red alert for the IJmond area because of an unprecedented heat wave. Local authorities advised residents to stay indoors when possible, avoid strenuous activity, stay hydrated and look after the elderly and other vulnerable groups.

All primary schools adopted a tropical timetable and many secondary schools cancelled exams and postponed book returns. Child‑care centres in Velsen and Beverwijk closed for the day, citing insufficient cooling facilities. Sports venues such as the Sportfondsenbad Beverwijk and cultural sites like Cultuurhuis Heemskerk halted activities. Waste collection was suspended in several neighbourhoods, and municipal roll‑containers remained unemptied.

Essential health services at the Rode Kruis Hospital continued, and some facilities, such as the Jeugd en Vreugd playground in Beverwijk, remained open during cooler evening hours.
