IJmond region sees continued high levels of metals and PAHs in dust
Recent deposition measurements conducted by the RIVM indicate that levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals continue to settle on the ground in the IJmond region at higher rates than in non-industrial areas. The emissions from Tata Steel remain a significant source of these substances, though other factors such as wind patterns and the re-suspension of existing pollution also contribute.
In Wijk aan Zee, there are indications that the amounts of PAHs, lead, manganese, and chromium deposited in 2025 were slightly lower than in previous studies. Additionally, iron levels have decreased significantly across most areas since 2020. However, it remains unclear if these declines are structural, as varying weather conditions, including wind strength and precipitation, influence deposition rates.
The RIVM previously determined that exposure to certain levels of lead and PAHs in the area is undesirable for the health of children, although no direct health effects were expected from other measured metals. While the dust does not pose an immediate health threat from all metals, it continues to cause nuisance for residents in the villages surrounding Tata Steel.
