IJmuiden celebrates 150 years since the opening of the North Sea Canal
IJmuiden will mark its 150th anniversary on Sunday, November 1, 2026, commemorating the official founding of the city and the opening of the North Sea Canal by King Willem III.
The anniversary celebrations conclude with a public event at Plein 1945. The program includes the premiere of the musical ‘De Kanaalgravers’ at the Haventheater IJmuiden, which depicts the history of the canal's construction.
Key highlights of the celebration include the burial of a time capsule by local youth and Mayor Frank Dales, intended to be opened in 150 years. Additionally, a historical projection will be displayed on the town hall tower, accompanied by musical performances from the Tata Steel Orchestra and singer Jesse Prins.
