IKEA launches new recycled version of FRAKTA bag
IKEA has introduced a new version of its iconic blue FRAKTA bag to mark its 30th anniversary. The updated bag is manufactured using at least 90 percent recycled material, maintaining the original design, functionality, and low price point.
Development of the new version involved several years of engineering by the IKEA of Sweden team to increase the proportion of recycled content without compromising durability. At least 70 percent of the material is sourced from food and plastic industry waste, such as food containers and large milk powder bags. A small amount of non-recycled polypropylene is included to ensure the bag can carry up to 25 kg.
The production process has also been updated to be fully automated. The handles are now integrated directly into the bag using the same recycled plastic, eliminating the need for manual sewing and saving approximately 89,000 kilometers of thread. Any excess material generated during production is returned to the manufacturing cycle to create new bags.
