IKEA launches second-hand furniture marketplace in Ireland
IKEA has launched a second-hand marketplace in Ireland, allowing customers to buy and sell pre-owned furniture directly with one another. The initiative is part of the company’s circular retail strategy to extend product lifespans and reduce waste.
Under the new system, sellers must be members of IKEA’s free Family loyalty scheme. Sellers are responsible for uploading photographs and accurately describing the condition of items using categories such as ‘As new’, ‘Used’, or ‘Very used’. The company will not physically inspect individual items; instead, it reviews listings before they go live.
Certain items, including mattresses, appliances, food, and recalled or modified products, are prohibited from the platform. To facilitate transactions, IKEA processes payments through the platform and holds the buyer’s money for 48 hours. During this window, buyers can report items that differ significantly from their descriptions to seek a refund. After 48 hours, disputes are the responsibility of the buyer and seller.
