IKEA opens first store in Coimbra, Portugal, boosting local jobs
IKEA held a pre‑inauguration on 6 July ahead of the official opening of its first store in Coimbra on 30 July. The €3 million investment introduces a pilot store format – the first of its kind in Portugal and one of only a few worldwide – located in the Mondego Retail Park in Taveiro.
The 37‑person team will offer a reduced‑size showroom, a circular‑use area for product reuse, and a Swedish grocery section. Local officials highlighted the project as a signal of confidence in the city, noting its potential to create direct and indirect jobs, support the regional economy, and integrate local firms into IKEA’s sustainable supply chain.
IKEA emphasizes the store’s focus on sustainable and circular practices, aiming to provide nearby families with accessible, environmentally responsible furniture and décor while strengthening Coimbra’s position as an economic hub in Portugal’s Centro region.
