IKEA launches pilot “small but mighty” store in Coimbra, Portugal

IKEA opened a new pilot store in Coimbra on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the Mondego Retail Park in Taveiro. The 4,124 m² outlet uses the company’s “small but mighty” concept – a compact format that combines features of its larger stores and planning studios. It offers roughly 2,000 items for immediate purchase, a circular area for second‑life products, and an IKEA Food section with the brand’s classic meals.

The project represents a €3 million investment and creates 37 jobs. Fifteen staff members transferred from the former Coimbra Planning Studio, while the remaining employees were recruited locally. Store director Guilherme Ribeiro said the aim is to bring a practical, inspiring shopping experience closer to customers in central Portugal. Coimbra’s mayor, Ana Abrunhosa, welcomed the opening as a sign of confidence in the city’s growth.

The format is a pilot for Portugal and one of only a handful of similar stores worldwide, allowing IKEA to test a more agile retail model while supporting local employment and sustainability initiatives.
