IKEA to open first East Malaysia store in Kuching this December

IKEA Malaysia has announced that it will open its first store in East Malaysia in Kuching this December. This new location marks a strategic shift for the retailer, as it will be the company’s first small-format store in Malaysia, differing from the four large-scale outlets currently operating in the country.

Malcolm Pruys, IKEA Malaysia Country Retail Director, stated that the move aims to make the IKEA shopping experience more accessible and relevant to the residents of Sarawak. The small-format concept is designed for convenience, allowing customers to browse room settings and purchase selected products for immediate home transport.

To prepare for the launch, the company conducted research into local living habits in Kuching. Findings indicated that local homes place a high value on family, togetherness, and hospitality, with living and dining areas serving multiple social functions. The new store intends to provide home furnishing solutions that reflect these specific cultural needs and address local storage and organization challenges.
