IKEA updates return policy requirements in Spain

IKEA has updated its commercial return policy in Spain, introducing stricter requirements for customers wishing to return purchases. While the company maintains its 365-day return window, it now generally requires that items remain in their original packaging, unopened, unsealed, and with all labels intact.

Under the previous policy, IKEA could accept unpacked or even assembled items for return, provided they were unused and in a condition suitable for a “second life.” The new rules, applicable to purchases made from April 2026, mean that opening a box to check dimensions or suitability may disqualify a product from being returned under this commercial policy.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has issued a warning regarding these changes, noting that consumers should verify product measurements and characteristics before opening packaging. The OCU clarified that while these commercial terms have tightened, they cannot override the legal right of withdrawal for distance purchases.
