Iker Casillas discusses conflict with José Mourinho at Real Madrid

A new Netflix documentary titled ‘Mourinho’ has brought renewed attention to the turbulent relationship between former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and manager José Mourinho during his first tenure at the club.

Casillas addressed the friction, specifically defending a controversial phone call he made to Xavi Hernandez. As both the captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, Casillas sought to ease tensions between Spanish internationals from Real Madrid and Barcelona. Casillas noted the difficulty of managing teammates who were rivals on the pitch but allies for the national team.

Mourinho offered a different perspective, suggesting the players had become ‘spoiled’. He cited early disagreements regarding training schedules and hotel stays as signs of this attitude. Former player Sami Khedira also commented on the era, suggesting Mourinho’s management style ‘poisoned the locker room’ by creating unnecessary tension and sidelining key figures like Casillas.
