Iker Muniain appointed head coach of San Lorenzo

Spanish former international Iker Muniain has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of Argentine club San Lorenzo, succeeding Gustavo Álvarez. The club confirmed that Muniain will travel to Buenos Aires this week to finalise details, though the contract length remains unsettled. A release clause in his previous deal with Spain's Salamanca allowed him to leave without penalty.

Muniain, who retired as a player in mid‑2025 after a spell with San Lorenzo, began his coaching career with CD Derio in Spain’s fifth tier. He was also linked with a move to Salamanca before the San Lorenzo offer prevailed. The club cited his familiarity with the squad, strong fan connections, and willingness to tackle a challenging institutional and economic situation as key reasons for the hire. Other candidates such as Ramón Díaz, Néstor Gorosito, Rubén Darío Insua and others were considered before the decision was made.
