Ilê Aiyê celebrates 52 years with announcement of 2027 Carnival theme

The Afro-Brazilian block Ilê Aiyê is celebrating its 52nd anniversary with a special event at Largo da Tieta in Pelourinho, Salvador. The celebration includes musical performances by Band’Aiyê, Orísun, and Muzenza, alongside Feir’Aiyê, an event dedicated to Black female entrepreneurs in sectors such as fashion, beauty, and literature.

During the festivities, the group announced its theme for the 2027 Carnival: “Togo – O Assigamé e o Império das Nana Benz.” The theme will honor the culture of Togo, specifically focusing on the matriarchal strength and history of the Nana Benz, powerful women who were prominent textile entrepreneurs in West Africa.

To prepare for the 2027 season, the organization plans to host a music festival prior to its traditional Black Beauty Night competition. The project aims to continue the block's mission of promoting African heritage and Black female protagonism.
