Ilario Martella, former Italian investigating judge, dies
Ilario Martella, a prominent former Italian investigating judge, has died at the age of 91 at the Civita Castellana Hospital.
Martella held significant roles within the Italian judiciary, serving as the substitute prosecutor for the Republic of Rome and later as an investigating judge at the Court of Rome from 1978 to 1990. During his tenure, he led high-profile investigations into terrorism, organized crime, and major historical events.
He was notably responsible for the investigations into the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, as well as the disappearances of Emanuela Orlandi and Mirella Gregori in 1983. His career concluded in 2008 as an honorary additional president at the Court of Cassation.
