Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi’s new film, ‘Silent Friend’, explores the connection between humanity and nature through three interconnected timelines centered around a majestic ginkgo biloba tree in Marburg, Germany.

The narrative spans over a century, beginning in 1908 with the first female student at the University of Marburg discovering universal patterns through photography. The story continues in 1972 with a student undergoing personal transformation through the observation of a geranium, and concludes in 2020 with a Hong Kong neuroscientist studying cognitive development.

Filmed in locations across Germany, including Marburg’s botanical garden and Cologne, the film features an international cast including Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Léa Seydoux, and Luna Wedler. The production is described as a poetic, sensory experience that treats plants as active participants in the human experience.
