Ilham Aliyev addresses 2026 Pre-COP Leaders Event
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed participants of the 2026 Pre-COP Leaders Event, expressing support for global climate action. Aliyev extended gratitude to the governments of Fiji, Tuvalu, and Australia for organizing the summit.
During his address, Aliyev emphasized the importance of connecting the legacy of COP29, hosted by Azerbaijan, to the upcoming COP31. He noted that while Azerbaijan faces its own climate challenges, such as the receding Caspian Sea level, water shortages, and frequent flooding, the nation recognizes that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face an existential threat from the climate crisis.
He highlighted that although SIDS contribute minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, they suffer disproportionate impacts on their economies, infrastructure, and ecosystems.
