Ilham Aliyev asserts Azerbaijan's independence in remarks targeting external influence
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made several pointed remarks during the eighth congress of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party in Baku, which observers interpret as indirect criticisms of Turkey.
Addressing the concept of nations having a ‘big uncle,’ Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan does not have such a figure. He emphasized that the country does not require external support, noting that during times of need, such as the refugee crisis or during the Karabakh war, no one provided assistance. Aliyev also remarked that Azerbaijan has purchased all its equipment, including weaponry, at market prices without receiving discounts, sometimes even paying above market rates.
Additionally, Aliyev addressed domestic matters, implicitly responding to international criticism regarding recent decisions in Baku, such as restrictions on religious attire in schools. He urged critics to stay out of Azerbaijan’s internal affairs and respect the country’s sovereignty.
