Ilhan Omar faces federal investigation into citizenship and immigration records

Federal agents conducted a raid on the Washington, D.C. residence of Representative Ilhan Omar on October 12, 2026, seizing her cellphone, passport, computers, and notebooks. The Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department are conducting an ongoing criminal investigation into potential immigration fraud involving documents submitted by Omar’s family decades ago.

Investigators are specifically examining whether Omar or her late father misrepresented her age on immigration paperwork to obtain citizenship. Discrepancies exist in records listing her birth year as either 1981 or 1982; if she was born in 1981, she would have been 18 rather than 17 when her father applied for citizenship in 2000, potentially affecting her eligibility for automatic citizenship.

Authorities have issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas to Omar’s family members, including her sister, Sahra Noor. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin described the investigation as a ‘strong case.’

Rep. Omar has denied all allegations of wrongdoing, characterizing the investigation and the raid as politically motivated attempts by the Trump administration to intimidate political opponents ahead of the November midterm elections.
