Brazil celebrates Jorge Amado and Afro-Brazilian culture
Various cultural events across Brazil are celebrating Afro-Brazilian heritage and the legacy of writer Jorge Amado, who would have been 114 this week.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Biblioteca Parque Estadual is hosting the ‘Parque de Ideias’ project, featuring lectures, workshops, and the play ‘Três Irmãos’, inspired by Amado’s ‘Seara Vermelha’. Additionally, the Feira das Yabás at CCBB Rio celebrates samba and suburban gastronomy, featuring performances by Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz and the Velhas Guardas of Império Serrano and Portela.
In Bahia, Salvador is hosting the ‘3 Obás de Xangô’ exhibition at CAIXA Cultural, exploring the intersection of art, Candomblé, and the friendship between Jorge Amado, Carybé, and Dorival Caymmi. In Ilhéus, celebrations include the ‘Xirê no quarteirão Jorge Amado’ to honor Candomblé traditions and the ‘Projeto Vunje’ percussion performances for youth.
Other regional activities include the Ajeumbó project in Parnamirim, which focuses on Afro-Brazilian culinary traditions through film and gastronomy. Meanwhile, the Academia de Letras da Bahia is holding a session to honor the late academic and former president of the Court of Justice of Bahia, Paulo Roberto Bastos Furtado.
