Ilhéus public transport agreement ensures service continuity
The Municipality of Ilhéus, the Public Ministry of Bahia (MPBA), and Atlântico Transportes Ltda. have signed an agreement to ensure the continuity of public collective transport in the city. The deal aims to reorganize the system and protect user rights through a transition process.
Under the terms of the agreement, Atlântico Transportes Ltda. will cease its operations by October 31. The municipality will manage the transition to a new operator starting in November. Additionally, technical studies will be conducted to support a future public bidding process for the regular provision of services.
The agreement follows a mediation process led by the Center for Self-Composition and Consensus Building (Compor), initiated by the 8th and 11th Prosecutor's Offices of Ilhéus. This mediation helped facilitate the resumption of bus services on October 22 following a recent stoppage.
In local legislative discussions, César Porto, President of the Ilhéus City Council, advocated for municipal subsidies to maintain current fare levels. He argued that financial support is necessary to cover rising operational costs—such as fuel, maintenance, and wages—without passing the full economic burden onto passengers.
