Ilias Aristopoulos, master zourna player, passes away

Ilias Aristopoulos, known as ‘Kakaroúkas’, a prominent master of the zourna and a central figure in the traditional music of Missolonghi and Aetolia-Acarnania, has passed away.

The Agios Symeos Panigiri Association expressed deep sorrow over his loss, describing him as a legendary guardian of musical tradition. For decades, his playing was inextricably linked to the Agios Symeos festival, serving as the signal to begin celebrations and accompanying the local processions.

Aristopoulos was recognized for his technical skill and authentic style, which became a benchmark for generations of local musicians. The association noted that his passing leaves a significant void in the regional musical community.
