Ilias Kasidiaris released from prison and announces new political party

Ilias Kasidiaris, a former Member of Parliament and convicted leader of the Golden Dawn criminal organization, was released from Domokou prison on September 15, 2026, at 12:00 after serving his sentence.

Upon his release, Kasidiaris announced his intention to return to the central political scene and declared the founding of a new national political party. He stated that he would not be prevented from returning to Parliament by political opponents, asserting that the ultimate judge in a democracy is the people.

His release has sparked significant legal and political debate in Greece. His lawyer, Vaso Pantazi, claimed he is the only Greek prisoner released without an irrevocable conviction and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court and international human rights bodies. Meanwhile, Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis noted a trend toward far-right politics and violence in the country, stating that judges will ultimately decide if Kasidiaris is legally permitted to run for office under existing laws.
