Ilias Kasidiaris release sparks political debate and school donation controversy
The release from prison of Ilias Kasidiaris, a former leader of the criminal organization Golden Dawn, has sparked significant political and social debate in Greece. Kasidiaris, convicted of leading a criminal organization, has expressed intentions to return to politics, potentially through a new party. This move raises legal questions regarding Greek electoral laws, which prohibit political parties from forming coalitions if their leadership or members have been convicted of serious crimes.
In Megara, a controversy erupted after the Parents' Association of the 1st Primary School publicly thanked Kasidiaris for a financial donation intended to repair the school's roof. The post was quickly deleted following intense backlash from the educational community. The Kostas Varnalis Teachers' Association of Western Attica condemned the donation, labeling it a ‘bloody donation’ and a ‘cheap poison’ aimed at infiltrating the school system.
Educators have called on the Municipality of Megara and the Ministry of Education to fulfill their responsibilities regarding school maintenance to prevent such private interventions. The situation has also prompted discussions regarding the role of the media in covering far-right figures and the broader implications for democratic institutions during an election year.
