Romania: Interim PM Bolojan discusses fiscal consolidation with investors

Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan met with international investors, including representatives from J.P. Morgan, to reaffirm Romania's commitment to fiscal consolidation. Investors praised recent efforts to reduce the budget deficit and control public spending, though they emphasized the need for policy predictability to support long-term investment. Bolojan noted that the budget deficit in the first seven months of 2026 fell by approximately 37% compared to 2025, and public investments rose to 76 billion lei, an increase of nearly 15 billion lei over the previous year.

Bolojan stressed the urgent need for a fully empowered government to maintain these reforms and maximize the absorption of European funds through the PNRR. He acknowledged that fiscal corrections have caused economic contraction and reduced consumption driven by debt.

In contrast, AUR senator Petrișor Peiu criticized the current administration, labeling Romania the ‘economic sick man of Europe’ due to stagflation and recession. The AUR party has stated it will only support a new government if it is included in the governing coalition and if certain conditions regarding the prime minister are met.
