Ilie Bolojan refuses to resign, proposes technocratic government for Romania

Romanian interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has announced he will not resign, stating he will remain in office until a successor is appointed to avoid deepening the country's political crisis. Bolojan warned that his departure would be ‘irresponsible’ and could paralyze government activities during a period of internal and external instability.

Bolojan has proposed the formation of a neutral technocratic government to address urgent issues, including a necessary budget rectification. He noted that funds for critical sectors, specifically health and transport, are nearing exhaustion. He also emphasized the need to prepare the 2027 budget and continue administrative reforms.

The interim leader warned that prolonged political instability could increase borrowing costs for the state and negatively impact Romania's credit rating, noting that even a single percentage point increase in interest rates could cost the country billions annually. He attributed the current deadlock to a ‘de facto PSD-AUR coalition’ that left the country without a full-power government.

In response, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu defended the decision to dismiss the previous government, calling it an ‘extraordinarily good calculation’ and criticizing Bolojan's management. Meanwhile, interim Vice Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu accused the PSD and AUR of causing ‘130 days of chaos’ in Romania.
