Ilie Nastase names Rafael Nadal the best player he has seen

Tennis legend Ilie Nastase has named Rafael Nadal as the best player he has ever seen, prioritizing Nadal's dominance at Roland Garros over the Grand Slam title counts of other players.

Speaking at the Festival dello Sport in Trento, the former world No. 1 noted that while it is difficult to compare players across different eras, Nadal's achievement of winning 14 French Open titles is uniquely significant. Nastase remarked, “winning 14 times in Paris is worth more than any other Grand Slam.”

While acknowledging Novak Djokovic's record 24 Grand Slam titles and Roger Federer's 20, Nastase emphasized that total trophy counts are not his primary metric for greatness. He also commented on the current era, identifying Jannik Sinner as a leading figure due to his strong serve and movement.
