Žilina Region Cemeteries Marked by Commemoration, Theft, and Fire Risks
During the recent All Saints and All Souls Day observances, cemeteries across the Žilina region in Slovakia were illuminated by thousands of candles as residents gathered to honor the deceased. Families visited gravesites to clean monuments and place flowers, wreaths, and decorations.
However, the period was marred by reports of thefts in cities such as Martin and Žilina, where decorations, flowers, and wreaths were stolen from graves and relocated to other sites. Additionally, the high volume of flammable decorations and candles increased fire risks. In Kysucké Nové Mesto, a visitor successfully intervened to extinguish a fire on a grave to prevent further damage.
