Ilioupoli sanitation worker injured in workplace accident

A sanitation worker for the Municipality of Ilioupoli suffered a severe injury on Friday morning, October 9, when his hand became trapped in a bin while being moved to a pulping vehicle. The accident resulted in the amputation of a finger on his left hand. Due to rapid medical intervention, doctors were able to reattach the finger using sutures.

The Municipality of Ilioupoli Employees Association issued a statement following the incident, citing systemic failures in health and safety protocols. The association highlighted several critical issues, including an aging fleet of garbage trucks with high mileage, a lack of planning to replace old mechanical equipment, and delays in providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to staff. They also noted that many vehicles lack basic first aid kits and called for immediate measures to protect workers and prevent future accidents.
